Text tracks for web video
WebVTT is a text format for timed captions and other text tracks. A file starts with WEBVTT and contains cue time ranges and text. It may also contain cue IDs, settings, notes and style or region definitions.

Every video starts with an idea.
How VTT differs from SRT
VTT uses a period before milliseconds and can use a short minute/second timestamp. It can carry information that SRT cannot, such as positioning settings and regions. A converter needs to tell you what is dropped rather than just renaming the extension.
From a caption track to another editor
Convert VTT to SRT when your editor asks for SRT. Convert to TXT when you only need the transcript. Speaker labels can become readable name prefixes; layout metadata is not part of the plain transcript.
